Kickout flashing is a specific type of rain diverter that guides water away from a nearby vertical wall cladding on a roof to prevent collection or interior damage. These features are built with a slope to push water into the gutter system. With this addition installed, property owners enjoy knowing their dwelling is safe from leaks and other types of water penetration.
Preexisting and soon-to-be-built roofs can benefit from a kickout flashing installation. These additions are welded at the bottom of the roof’s corner, intersecting with the vertical wall above the gutter. You can also add pieces near other structures, such as vents, skylights and chimneys.
According to the International Residential Code (IRC), installation should occur at a 110-degree angle and must extend at least 4 inches up the sidewall. Following these specifications will prevent debris buildup and ice formation in the winter.
Kickout flashing is required for all one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses with up to three floors. The IRC denotes that flashing installation applies to roofs on newly built structures and additions. Of course, there are exceptions in many areas, so you should check your local laws and regulations regarding appropriate flashing use.
This type of diverter flashing is built from heavy-duty aluminum, which offers additional defense against deterioration. Many options are available in powder-coated or uncoated configurations and unique colors to provide the protection and style your clients deserve.
